March 10: Pondicherry

Travel through a landscape of palm trees and rice paddies, visiting Auroville en route to Pondicherry (approx 5 hrs). Auroville is an amazing experiment in international living. Made up of 80 rural settlements and home to over 1,500 residents, more than half of whom are foreign nationals, this living project dedicated to human unity also houses the world's largest solid crystal.

Once a French colony, there are still reminders of French influence in Pondicherry's architecture, the wide town squares and even in the policemen's uniforms. Take a walking tour and visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, the local temples and the old French quarter.
_______

Auroville is an Utopian Colony......it is difficult to describe.....it is an attempt to bring together people from round the world to work in harmony.....of course you must give up all worldly possessions to the community.. They have built a large gold dome, described by Lonely Planet as a "Golf Ball". We see a video which describes the workings of the "Auroville community", walk to view the "Ball" and head for Pondicherry. The tree below is a single tree with roots that make it appear to be many trees...Banyan tree.

We visit a local temple and have an elephant tap us on our heads as we enter the Temple. We also visit the home of a famous mystic burial site. Frank and I walk the town...view Gandhi's statue located on the beach, trek through the local market before heading back to the hotel for dinner.

Dinner is on the terrace...cool breeze and good food. The vegetarian food is quite good and tasty....the Indians use of spices and food combinations make eating vegetarian quite appetizing.
